GC Ambitions

The 2022 edition features two individual time trials. Stage 2, a testing 9.2 km course in the heart of Budapest against the iconic city backdrop, with the city streets posing a technical challenge. Stage 21, the second ITT and the final stage of the Giro is another technical course, through the city and on the outskirts of Verona. This final 17.4 km test is the 21st day of racing and signifies the last battle for General Classification (GC).

Although these stages are short, the time that can be either gained or lost, during these intense individual time trial stages plays critically into the overall classification. For the modern-day GC contender, every opportunity needs to be exploited in these all-important stages.

A Great Run In

Yates and Sobrero have been hitting their straps in their pre-Giro race targets, Yates taking a stage victory and overal runner-up in Paris-Nice and two stage victories at the Vuelta a Asturias. For the Italian National TT Champ, a solid 6th place in the opening prologue at the Tour de Romandie shows his potential against the clock.

A Great Start to the Giro

Team BikeExchange had a dream start to the 2022 Giro, with Simon Yates taking victory on Stage 2 and Matteo Sobrero placing 4th on the stage, claiming the Young Riders classification. While there are still 19 stages remaining after the first ITT, this statement of form by Simon Yates stamps his intentions and his authority as a GC favourite.
