The GreenEdge-Sync Relationship

The GreenEdge-Sync Relationship

Posted by Joe Laverick on 12th Nov 2024

Since 2022, GreenEdge Cycling have been using products from Sync Ergonomics. It all started with Simon Yates winning Stage 2 of the Giro d’Italia in Budapest. From there, the relationship has blossomed. With Simon now moving on from GreenEdge, it seems a fitting time to look back at the relationship.

With both Sync and GreenEdge being Australian, it may seem like an inevitable choice. It however, isn’t that simple. There were multiple parts that came together to make GreenEdge the perfect team. Giant has been a brand that we’ve always worked alongside, in research and development too.

The cherry on top of the relationship is Marco Pinotti. The Italian is a former professional rider himself, with four Giro stage wins to his name: two individual, and two team time trials. Nicknamed “The Professor”, he is known for his attention to detail when it comes to position and equipment.

"Working with someone like Marco, makes our life at Sync so much easier. There is a shared goal to make riders faster, and more efficient. There isn’t pushback, but a desire to keep pushing further forward.

Having a common goal makes working with Marco Pinotti and GreenEdge an easy process. It also helps that through the AUS Cycling network, we have direct relationships with a number of the athletes on the GreenEdge roster, which further facilitates the development work.

Thanks to modern technology, such as 3D scanning, there have been many instances where even without close proximity, we have been able to tie Aerobar development in with other team services.

For Sync, the relationship with GreenEdge has been pivotal in developing all of our top-tier products. The Aerobar Three and Aerobar Four extension geometry has evolved out of the very very first custom Titanium extensions we designed and manufactured for Simon Yates, Luke Durbridge and Mateo Sobrero.

Now, with the likes of Luke Plapp and Ben O’Connor in the fold, their performance requirements will continue to push the development of new products. The Driveline components we released in 2024 in partnership with cSixx are one such example of the drive for product development, and this will continue in 2025."

The relationship with GreenEdge furthered once more at the start of this year when Luke Plapp moved across from the Ineos Grenadiers. Though Plappy had never ridden for Australia’s only World Tour team before, it very much felt like a homecoming. We’ve worked with Luke since 2018, when he was a Junior with a dream. He finished 2nd at World TT Championships that year, behind a certain Remco Evenepoel.

Luke’s timing to GreenEdge was perfect. Coming to the team in Olympic year, it allowed us to fast-track him onto some of our new products: Aerobar Four and Driveline Ecosystem. Since our early days, Luke had always been one of the first to trial our prototypes.

Next season marks a change for the team. Not just Simon Yates moving on to Visma-Lease a Bike, but Ben O’Connor coming in too. We want to thank Simon for trusting our products, and bringing us one of our first big wins on the world stage. We wish him all the best going forward. With Ben coming onboard, we’re excited to see how we can help him develop his time-trialling towards his ambitions with general classification.
